HAND WOVEN
Second Harvest explores the potential of parali (agricultural residue) as a textile material. In response to the widespread burning of crop residue, the project reimagines what is often treated as waste into a functional and tactile woven table runner. Through weaving, texture, and material experimentation, the parali is given a new purpose—transforming agricultural residue into a considered textile for contemporary living.
Millions of tonnes of paddy straw are burned every year, releasing harmful pollutants into the air while valuable agricultural biomass is reduced to ash and waste.
Explored woven structures using 2/20s cotton yarn as warp, with parali, parali rope, parali braid, and cotton yarn as weft, exploring varied textures, densities, and structural possibilities.
The set comprises a 2 m × 16 in table runner accompanied by four 16 × 12 in table mats.
Conducted hands-on experimentation with natural materials including bamboo fibre, banana, daab, and palm leaves to study their properties, limitations, and applications, focusing on texture, strength, flexibility, and durability.
